DIY Pom Chair Decorations

My dining room chairs are hand-me-downs…times 2. Which means that my mom’s cousin gave them to my mom (who reupholstered them and used them for 10 years) who gave them to me. So let’s just say that new dining room chairs are in order folks. But now is not the time to go off and buy that beautiful West Elm dining set! For the holidays are upon us and we are watching our wallets because travels and gifts tend to add up. So when throwing together a fun Halloween dinner I made sure to include a craft that would spruce up my good-for-now dining chairs. After all, they could use some TLC.

The craft I chose was my chair-back tissue paper poms in orange and black. But you can pick any tissue paper color to fit the party theme!

Here’s what you will need to get started:

– For 4 poms you will need 20 sheets of tissue paper. I used 10 in black and 10 in orange

– Ribbon of your choice

– Scissors or a rotary fabric cutter and fabric cutting mat

– Floral wire

Step 1:

First, count off 5 sheets of paper for your first pom. Using your rotary cutter, cut your sheets in half straight down the middle.

Step 2:

Stack your two halves (5 sheets in each half) on top of each other to make one stack of 10 half-sheets.

Step 3:

Now, fold your stack of tissue paper like an accordion with about a 1″ wide fold. In other words, fold the bottom up 1″ and then flip over the stack and make another 1″ fold. Then continue this pattern until you have a tissue paper fan/accordion shape.

Step 4:

Holding your tissue paper all folded up, use a small piece of your floral wire to secure your tissue paper around the center.

Step 5:

Then carefully slide a strip of ribbon (about 3 feet long) through your floral wire. This will serve as the tie that will secure your pom to the chair.

Step 6:

To create a pretty poof effect, it’s fun to cut the ends of your tissue paper strip like a triangle. This makes it so your poms look more floral and festive!

Step 7:

Now the fun part! Carefully unfold each individual piece of tissue paper towards the wire center to create a little tissue pom! Make sure that you are folding the tissue strips up towards the side that does not have the ribbon on it. You want the ribbon on the flat side of your pom that will face your chair back.

And you are done! Darling chair decorations CHECK!

Now tie up those poms and get all festive! :)
