My obsession for all things party has spread like wildfire to all my neighborhood friends. Which, I think, is really for the betterment of humanity! I mean, more parties means more fun and more face-to-face interaction with lovely people. Yes, I am all about making real-life friends and using parties to bring us together. So when my friend Stacey asked me to help out with a few party details for her son’s first birthday I was like, “Fetch Yes!”
The first thing I did was take inventory of all my crafty supplies. I didn’t want to spend any money for this project because, hey, I’m not made out of money after all. And with a little creativity I came up with a craft that will help anchor any party theme: A Simple Cheap Party Table Runner! I may just make a table runner for every future party I throw.
Supplies:
– Paint in the colors of your party theme. This party was all about the primary colors: red, blue and yellow. I used regular acrylic craft paint that you can buy for $0.69 a bottle at the craft store.
– An old sheet cut into the thickness you want your table runner to be. I cut mine at about 20 inches thick so the dimensions were 20″X120″(the length of the table plus 2 feet).
– Stencils cut out of card-stock paper. For this party we used a “+” sign graphic to add visual interest so I free-hand cut a stencil using an X-Acto knife.
Step 1:
Place your stencil on your fabric and hold it down firmly. Then paint the fabric on the inside of the stencil. I made sure to cut a stencil for each color of paint. Also, you will notice that my fabric is really wrinkled, which is, in large part, due to the fact that my iron is broken. Then good news is that when I hung it out to let the paint dry over night a lot of the wrinkles disappeared. Not every craft goes on without a hitch.

Just after you finish painting in the stencil, carefully peel away the stencil and admire your cute little shape! Feel free to experiment with stencils and shapes to make your party unique and you!
Step 3:
Repeat steps 1 and 2, scattering shapes of different colors all down your table runner!
Step 4:
Enjoy your runner and party hard! The thing I love most about this runner is that it is subtle, but it really pulled the table all together. I even used this tutorial to make some cute gift bags that match and I can’t really get over how damn adorable these mini popcorn bags are. I mean, I may throw a movie-themed party or carnival party just so that I can use these bags again!
