Having planned a few parties and weddings on a tight budget, I’m always looking for ways to cut costs. This takes some creative thinking and bit of flexibility when it comes to party traditions. For example, every bride wants her darling groom to have a fitting boutonniere to compliment her bouquet, but a wedding flower bill can add up fast! So when one of my good friends suggested we throw a party with spray-painted silk flower boutonnieres I was like “Holy Duh! Why didn’t I think of that??” And I swear to you my reaction was that theatrical.
So I messed around with some silk flower boutonniere designs and my consensus was:
A. They looked AMAZING
B. There are super CHEAP, and…
C. Easiest boutonniere to make, ever.
So today I’m sharing with you my first DIY Wedding craft: Homemade Boutonnieres!
How to Make A Wedding Boutonniere…

– Silk flowers and fake berries. I love the combination of flowers, leaves, and berries, but you may have a different boutonniere design in mind. So long as they make a silk or plastic flower that fits your wishes, then it will work for this craft. I buy the flowers and berries in a bunch and then cut them down to individual stems. Make sure you leave a little stem to wrap the floral tape around.
– Floral tape. You can find this tape at the craft store and I prefer it in white, as opposed to green, because it is easier to spray paint white.
– Spray paint in your wedding or party color. You could spray paint all the boutonnieres in different wedding colors!

This step only makes sense if you are including berries or greenery in you boutonniere that have wire stems. I wrap the wire stem around the plastic flower stem, which helps them stay together when wrapping them in floral tape. Just a quick tip to help save you some crafting swear words.

Take your floral tape and begin wrapping it around the stem of your boutonniere. Wrap at a slight angle so that you wrap up and down the stem several times. Floral tape sticks to itself, so when you are done wrapping, simply rip off the tape end, and stick it to your wrapped boutonniere stem.

Spray paint your boutonniere. I always spray paint outside where there is good ventilation and I make sure to place the items on top of some scrap paper so that nothing else is accidentally painted pink. It may take several coats to completely cover your boutonniere and I suggest letting each coat completely dry before you spray another. This will help prevent any paint dripping.

Once your boutonnieres are dry they are ready to par-ty! Simply pin them on like you would a normal boutonniere and go off and get married and stuff :)
Also, don’t be afraid to get creative with your boutonnieres…these gold ones I made for a Golden Birthday Party were some of my absolute favorites!
